The Grade 1 Leap: Why Karun's First-Ever Competition Ended in Gold at ASDC 2026
9th August 2026: Not Debut, But Grade 1
At ASDC 2026 Singapore, the Debut category is for newcomers. Grade 1 is a different beast. Faster tempos, more complex grooves and stricter judging on technique and musicality.
Most teachers would tell a first-time competitor: "Start in Debut. Get experience."
Karun didn't. For his first time ever in a drum competition, he entered Grade 1.
And on 9th August 2026, he proved why.
The judges awarded him the Top Prize Gold Award — Grade 1 Category. Not just an award but The Top Prize Gold. On his first attempt.
What Makes a Grade 1 Gold So Difficult?
Debut is about keeping time. Grade 1 is about controlling it.
To win Gold in Grade 1, you need:
- Flawless performance and tempo
- Dynamic control (not just playing loud)
- Stage presence that looks like you've done this for years
Karun had never done it before. But he played like he had.
The Real Story: Courage To Skip The Easy Route
This win is not just about talent. It's about mindset.
Many students stay comfortable in Debut for years because Grade 1 feels scary. The jump in syllabus, the harder songs and the tougher competition.
Karun's parents and his teacher Joshua Agilan made a bold decision: Don't play safe. Prepare harder and aim higher.
That mindset is what ASDC rewards. The judges don't give Top Gold just for not making mistakes, they give it for musical confidence. And confidence only comes when you challenge yourself.

3. The leap from Debut to Grade 1 is where champions are made.
He didn't wait to be "ready." He decided to be ready.
